Moibaguette takes the August mayorship
Eight names on the ballot, six rounds of counting, and a campaign built on one question: independence.
Moibaguette will run Montreal for the month of August, winning what kicoder called the town's most contested race yet.
Fourteen citizens cast ranked ballots. Moibaguette led from the first round with 6 first preferences to Fancyroyal's 3, with Baker Potato and puthivuthheng on 2 each. Five eliminations later he finished on 8 of 14 — 57.1%. The raw point totals agreed: 67 for Moibaguette, 56 for Baker Potato, 53 for puthivuthheng, 52 for Fancyroyal.
Three of the eight names on the ballot were Discord bots, nominated for the bit. Montreal Bot placed fifth on points, ahead of a human candidate, and MarriageBot picked up a genuine first preference. "I shudder to think what would happen if marriagebot got elected," outgoing mayor kicoder wrote at the halfway mark.
Moibaguette campaigned on one commitment and one proposal. The commitment: "to treat my role as mayor of Montreal with as much care as I can and with as much love as I may." The proposal was the one everybody remembered — putting independence from Acadia to the town, starting with open discussions in his first week. "This is not guaranteed," he wrote. "I will only act if you back me up."
The seat was open because kicoder stepped down at the end of a July that will be hard to follow. Montreal went from 437 chunks to 642, took on 32 residents net, climbed 31 places in the chunk rankings and 35 in population, ran the biggest build competition in the town's history, and crossed 110 residents on the last day of the month.
"This will be my last announcement as mayor," he wrote on July 30. "Thanks for your support."
